How to read the Finabase financials tab
A walkthrough of a company’s financials tab in Finabase: the annual and quarterly views, the three statement cards, the revenue flow diagram and calendar-quarter labels.
On this page
Every company page in Finabase has a Financials tab: the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, by quarter or by year, with a chart of any line's history and a flow diagram that shows where a period's revenue went. It is the quickest way to see a company's numbers without opening a 200-page filing.
It is also a summary built by a data vendor from those filings, so it pays to know how it is organized, how its period labels work and what it leaves out. This walkthrough uses Apple Inc.'s page, /symbol/aapl/financials, as it looked on October 30, 2026, and checks its numbers against Apple's own 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. At the end, it covers the valuation, earnings, dividends and holders tabs that sit beside it.
The layout
From top to bottom:
- The toggle and caption. "Annual" and "Quarterly" buttons, then a line reading, for Apple's quarterly view, "Period ending Jun 30, 2026 · select a line to chart its history". Finabase remembers your choice in your browser, so the next company you open uses the same view.
- Revenue & Expenses. A flow (Sankey) diagram of one period's income statement.
- Three cards: "Income statement", "Balance sheet" and "Cash flow", each a list of line items with the newest period's value.
The data comes from Sharadar fundamentals and covers up to 40 periods of history. A line appears only if the newest period has a non-zero value. Apple's income-statement card, for example, has no interest-expense line, because Apple stopped reporting interest expense separately after fiscal 2023.
Annual or quarterly?
Quarterly is the default because it shows the latest information: the June 2026 quarter was in Apple's 10-Q on July 31, 2026, while the latest annual figures were for fiscal 2025, which ended in September 2025. Use quarterly to see recent momentum and seasonality.
Annual smooths out seasons, which matters a lot for Apple. Its December quarter, which includes the holiday season, is by far its largest: $143.76 billion of revenue for the quarter ended December 27, 2025, against $109.42 billion for the June 2026 quarter. Comparing one quarter with the one before it mixes the business trend with the calendar. Compare a quarter with the same quarter a year earlier instead, or switch to annual.
Calendar quarters, not fiscal quarters
Apple's fiscal year ends on the last Saturday of September. Its fiscal 2026 third quarter ended June 27, 2026. Finabase shows that quarter as Q2 2026, period ending June 30, 2026.
Data vendors do this on purpose. Companies end their years in different months (Microsoft in June, Apple in September, Alphabet in December), and many use 52/53-week years that end on a weekday rather than a month-end. Mapping every report to the nearest calendar quarter-end lets a screen or a chart line up companies side by side: "Q2 2026" means the same three months of the economy for all of them. The cost is that the labels no longer match the company's press releases.
The annual view works the same way. Apple's fiscal 2025, which ended September 27, 2025, appears under the calendar year 2025, with a caption reading period ending Dec 31, 2025. The revenue there is still Apple's fiscal-year figure, 416.16B, the $416,161 million in the 10-K. The date is a vendor normalization, not a different set of numbers.
The three statement cards
Each card shows the newest period's value for every line. For Apple's quarter ended June 27, 2026 (the Q2 2026 column), the main lines read:
| Card | Lines (Finabase label → value) |
|---|---|
| Income statement | Total Revenue 109.42B · Cost of Revenue 54.65B · Gross Profit 54.77B · Operating Expenses 19.07B · Operating Income 35.70B · Income Tax Expense 6.48B · Net Income 29.79B · Earnings per Diluted Share 2.02 · EBIT 36.27B · Weighted Average Shares Diluted 14.71B |
| Balance sheet | Cash and Equivalents 39.54B · Investments 106.97B · Current Assets 149.82B · Total Assets 383.27B · Total Debt 84.34B · Current Liabilities 149.33B · Total Liabilities 275.75B · Shareholders Equity 107.52B |
| Cash flow | Net Cash Flow from Operations 34.37B · Capital Expenditure −2.46B · Issuance (Purchase) of Equity Shares −25.11B · Payment of Dividends −4.04B · Share Based Compensation 3.40B · Depreciation, Amortization & Accretion 3.32B |
A few labels need translating. EBIT here is earnings before interest and taxes as the vendor defines it; for Apple it equals pretax income (operating income 35.70B plus other income of 0.57B), because Apple reports no separate interest expense. Issuance (Purchase) of Equity Shares is mostly buybacks; the minus sign means cash went out. In the cash flow card, all outflows are negative: capital expenditure, buybacks, dividends. The balance sheet balances: 275.75B of liabilities + 107.52B of equity = 383.27B of assets.
For what each line means, see the statement guides: Income statement: how to read one line by line, with Apple, Balance sheet: assets, liabilities and equity explained with Apple and Cash flow statement: operating, investing and financing explained.
Click a line to chart its history
Click any row and a bar chart of that line opens under it, quarter by quarter or year by year depending on the toggle. This is the fastest way to answer questions like "is research spending rising faster than revenue?" Open Research and Development Expense, then Total Revenue, and compare the shapes. Apple's R&D was 11.73B in the June 2026 quarter, against $8,866 million in the same quarter a year earlier in the 10-Q, while revenue grew from $94,036 million to $109,417 million.
The Revenue & Expenses flow diagram
The flow diagram turns one income statement into bands whose widths are dollars. For Apple's June 2026 quarter:
- Revenue $109.42B splits into Cost of Revenue $54.65B and Gross Profit $54.77B.
- Gross profit joins Other Income $572.00M to make Gross Profit & Other Income $55.34B.
- That splits into Research & Development $11.73B, Selling, General & Admin $7.35B, Income Tax $6.48B and Net Income $29.79B.
Hover a band and the tooltip shows its year-over-year change and its share of revenue, so the Gross Profit band gives the gross margin and the Net Income band the net margin. Buttons above it switch between the last four periods (Q2 2026, Q1 2026, Q4 2025 and Q3 2025 for Apple). When the data reconciles, an optional Revenue by column splits revenue by business segment or region first.
Checking a number against the 10-Q
It is worth confirming, at least once per company, that the tab agrees with the filing.
If a number disagrees, the filing wins. Vendors occasionally restate, reclassify or lag a quarter.
What's not on the tab, and how to compute it
No trailing twelve months (TTM). Add the last four quarters yourself. Apple's quarterly revenue on the tab for the quarters ended September 2025, December 2025, March 2026 and June 2026 was 102.47B, 143.76B, 111.18B and 109.42B.
There is no common-size table (every line as a percentage of revenue) either, but the flow diagram's tooltips cover the main margins. The Free cash flow (FCF): definition, formula and Apple example and EBITDA guides explain those measures and their limits.
The tabs next to it
Valuation (/symbol/aapl/valuation) shows ten fiscal years of ratios, annual only, each as a small history chart: P/E, P/S, P/B, P/FCF, EV/EBITDA, EV/Sales and FCF yield; gross, operating and net margin, ROE, ROIC and ROA; year-over-year growth in revenue, operating income, diluted EPS and free cash flow; current ratio, quick ratio, debt to equity, net debt to EBITDA and interest coverage; dividend yield and payout ratio. A "Financial health" card adds an Altman Z-Score gauge, a Piotroski F-Score and a vendor letter rating. It has no forward P/E, PEG or quarterly multiples.
Earnings (/symbol/aapl/earnings) lists each report date, the quarter's actual end date, the EPS estimate, reported EPS and the surprise. Apple's July 30, 2026 row: quarter ending Jun 27, 2026, estimate 1.89, reported 2.02, surprise +0.13 (+6.88%). A "Next earnings" card gives the next expected date.
Dividends & splits lists every ex-dividend date and amount, and stock splits with their ratios. Apple's latest rows show $0.27 on August 10 and May 11, 2026 and $0.26 before that. Older amounts are as paid at the time, not adjusted for later splits: $0.82 in May 2020 was before the 4-for-1 split of August 2020, equal to $0.205 on today's share count.
Holders shows ownership percentages, the top institutional and mutual fund holders with their reported dates, and an insiders table (see 13F filings: what institutional holdings reports show and miss and Insider trading filings: Forms 3, 4 and 5 and how to read them).
Frequently asked questions
Why does Finabase show Apple's June quarter as Q2 2026?
Because the data is labeled by calendar quarter. Apple's fiscal third quarter ended June 27, 2026, which falls in the second calendar quarter of 2026, so it appears as Q2 2026 with a period end of June 30, 2026.
Does the financials tab show trailing-twelve-month figures?
No. Add the four most recent quarters yourself, or use the summary page's key statistics, which pass through the data provider's TTM values such as revenue and EPS.
Where are EBITDA and free cash flow?
They are not lines on the statement cards. Compute EBITDA as operating income plus depreciation and amortization, and free cash flow as operating cash flow minus capital expenditure, or see the EV/EBITDA and FCF yield histories on the Valuation tab.
Are the numbers audited?
Annual figures come from audited 10-K statements; quarterly figures come from 10-Q statements, which are reviewed but not audited. A fiscal fourth quarter has no 10-Q, so its figures come from the earnings release or are derived as the year minus the first nine months. Either way, the tab is a vendor's copy, so the filing on EDGAR is the authority.
Summary
The Finabase financials tab puts a company's three statements on one page, quarterly by default, with a click-to-chart history for every line and a flow diagram of where revenue goes. Its labels are calendar-normalized, which is why Apple's fiscal third quarter ended June 27, 2026 shows as Q2 2026 and its fiscal 2025 year carries a December 31 period end, but the numbers are the filed ones: 109.42B of revenue is Apple's $109,417 million. It has no TTM column and no EBITDA or free-cash-flow rows, and each takes one line of arithmetic from the lines it does show. For ratios, turn to the Valuation tab; for estimates and surprises, the Earnings tab.
