  10. Summary

The Aroon Oscillator is Aroon Up minus Aroon Down: one line, running from −100 to +100, that says whether a market's recent highs or its recent lows are fresher. Positive values mean the latest high is more recent than the latest low, the signature of an uptrend. Negative values mean the opposite. Tushar Chande published it alongside the two Aroon lines in 1995.

Collapsing two lines into one makes the indicator quick to read and easy to scan across many charts. It also throws some information away, and knowing what is lost matters. This guide calculates the oscillator by hand on Netflix's chart, walks through a year in which Netflix fell more than 40%, and explains how to read its levels, its zero crossings and its blind spots.

How it is built

The two Aroon lines each measure how many bars have passed since the most recent extreme in the look-back window. Aroon Up is 100 on the day of a new high and falls 4 points (with n = 25) for every day without one; Aroon Down does the same for lows. See Aroon indicator (Aroon Up and Aroon Down): reading new highs for the full treatment.

The oscillator subtracts them. Because each line moves in steps of 100 ÷ n, the oscillator also moves in those steps, which gives it a characteristic staircase look rather than the smooth curves of price-averaging oscillators.

The formula

A worked example on Netflix

On August 12, 2026, Netflix (NFLX) closed at $74.21. Over the previous 26 bars:

Step Value
Highest high, and when $76.90 on Aug 11 (1 bar ago)
Aroon Up = 100 × (25 − 1) ÷ 25 96
Lowest low, and when $65.08 on Jul 17 (18 bars ago)
Aroon Down = 100 × (25 − 18) ÷ 25 28
Aroon Oscillator = 96 − 28 +68

That day the oscillator crossed above zero for the first time since spring. Compare the last day of the chart, October 29, 2026: Netflix set a new 25-day low that day ($61.40), so Aroon Down was 100, while the 25-day high was ten bars old, giving Aroon Up 60 and an oscillator of −40.

Reading the oscillator

Reading What it says
+100 A new high today, and the low is a full window old
+50 to +100 Highs are much fresher than lows: an established uptrend
−50 to +50 No clear winner; often a range or a transition
−50 to −100 Lows are much fresher than highs: an established downtrend
−100 A new low today, and the high is a full window old

Zero crossings mark the moment the most recent high becomes fresher than the most recent low (or vice versa). They are the oscillator's main signal.

Persistence matters more than single readings. A market that holds above +50 for weeks is trending; one that swings across zero every few days is not.

The oscillator on a real chart: Netflix 2025–2026

Netflix (NFLX) daily with Aroon Oscillator (25) · 2025-10-30 to 2026-10-29 $60 $80 $100 $120 High $116.73 · Nov 13, 2025 Price -100 -50 0 50 100 Back above zero · Aug 12 Aroon Oscillator (25) Nov Dec Jan 2026 Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct
Netflix (NFLX), one year of daily bars with the Aroon Oscillator (25) as computed by Finabase. Shading marks readings above +50 and below −50.

Netflix had a difficult year: from a high of $116.73 on November 13, 2025 to a close of $62.05 on October 29, 2026, a fall of about 43% from the start of the period. The oscillator described it faithfully:

  • It was negative for 81 straight sessions, from the start of the chart through February 26, 2026, while the stock fell from about $109 to the low $80s. It sat at −60 on both December 31 and January 30.
  • It was at or below −50 on 133 of the 251 sessions, and at or above +50 on only 39.
  • It crossed zero just four times: upward on February 27 and August 12, downward on April 28 and September 18.

Neither upward crossing marked the end of the decline. After the February 27 cross (close $96.24), Netflix was 2.9% lower 20 sessions later and fell to $71.40 by the end of June. After the August 12 cross, at $74.21, it gained 2.4% over 20 sessions, then turned down again. In a persistent downtrend, rallies make fresh short-term highs, which is all the oscillator needs to turn positive.

How traders use the Aroon Oscillator

As a trend filter. Only take long setups when the oscillator is positive, or above +50 for a stricter filter, and only short setups when it is negative. On Netflix this would have kept a trader on the short side or out for most of the year.

Zero-line crossings. A cross above zero is an early signal that highs have become fresher than lows. As the Netflix example shows, in a downtrend these are often counter-trend rallies; a longer look-back or a second confirming indicator helps.

Scanning. Because it compresses two lines into one bounded number, the oscillator is easy to rank across a watchlist: the stocks at +100 are the ones setting new highs today with no recent lows.

Pitfalls and limitations

Information loss. An oscillator of 0 can mean both lines are at 100 (a wild bar that set a new high and a new low) or both are at 8 (a dead market). The two Aroon lines distinguish those cases; the oscillator does not.

Steps and jumps. When an old extreme leaves the window, the reading can jump 20 or 40 points in a day with no change in the market.

Size-blind. A marginal new high counts as much as a decisive breakout.

How Finabase calculates and scores the Aroon Oscillator

Finabase computes the oscillator with TA-Lib's AROONOSC function on each bar's high and low. A new AROONOSC study, listed as "Aroon Oscillator," defaults to 25 periods and is drawn in its own panel with guide lines at −50, 0 and +50.

In the technical gauge on the symbol page the Aroon Oscillator appears with its latest value and carries no Buy or Sell rule, so it always counts as neutral. Read the zero line and the ±50 levels on the chart yourself, with the caveats above.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Aroon Oscillator reading?

Above +50 is generally read as an uptrend and below −50 as a downtrend, with the strength of the reading growing toward ±100. Readings between −50 and +50 suggest no clear trend.

What does an Aroon Oscillator crossing zero mean?

The most recent high has become more recent than the most recent low (crossing up), or the reverse (crossing down). It is an early trend signal and often a false one inside a larger trend.

Is the Aroon Oscillator the same as Aroon?

It is derived from it: Aroon Up minus Aroon Down. The two-line Aroon carries more information; the oscillator is simpler to read and scan.

Summary

The Aroon Oscillator reduces Chande's two Aroon lines to one: positive when highs are fresher than lows, negative when lows are fresher. Through Netflix's 43% decline it spent 133 sessions at −50 or lower and crossed zero only four times, but its two upward crossings were rallies inside the downtrend, not the end of it. Use it as a direction filter and a scanning tool, and check the two component lines when it sits near zero.
