Coherent reports earnings Wednesday as prediction markets bet on indium phosphide, Nvidia, Zurcher and Jim Anderson’s remarks.
Coherent Corp. (NYSE:COHR) reports fiscal first-quarter earnings after the bell Wednesday, with its conference call at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Wall Street expects adjusted earnings of about $2 per share on revenue near $2.31 billion.
Coherent’s data center revenue surged 66% year over year last quarter, yet shares have plunged nearly 42% since that report, raising doubts that manufacturing can keep up with demand.
On Kalshi, traders are betting on which words CEO Jim Anderson and his team will say.
What Kalshi Predicts Coherent Will Say
“Indium Phosphide” leads at 97%. Coherent uses the material to make lasers for AI data centers, but its factories cannot make laser chips fast enough to meet demand. Its fix is switching from three-inch to six-inch wafers, which yield four times as many chips at half the cost.
“Nvidia” trades at 80%. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) invested $2 billion in Coherent in March and committed to purchasing billions of dollars of its products. Revenue from lasers covered by the partnership is expected to begin ramping in the December quarter.
"Multi-Rail" sits at 67%. The technology lets AI companies transmit more data between distant data centers using less equipment and power. Coherent sees a market above $2 billion by 2030, with initial revenue expected in the first half of 2027.
"Zurich" trades at 64%. Coherent plans to begin six-inch indium phosphide production at its Swiss factory in the first half of 2027, joining its existing six-inch lines in Texas and Sweden.
“Thermal Management” stands at 63%, while “Thermadite” trades at 58%. The company’s diamond-based cooling material conducts heat roughly twice as effectively as copper. Customers are testing samples, although revenue is not expected to ramp until the second half of 2027.
“Silicon Photonics” sits at 52%. Coherent launched its PhotonLink platform in September, combining lasers and optical components for next-generation AI networking. Initial revenue is expected in the December quarter.
What Kalshi Predicts Coherent Will Skip
"Optical Circuit Switch" trades at just 30%, with "Liquid Crystal" at 23%. Coherent’s optical switches use liquid-crystal technology, and the company has estimated the market could reach $4 billion by 2030. Executives often say "OCS" or "Optical Circuit Switching," neither of which counts under Kalshi’s rules.
“Apple” sits at 26%, despite Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) signing an expanded multiyear agreement last year for Coherent lasers used in iPhone and iPad Face ID systems.
"American Manufacturing" trades at 16% and "CHIPS Act" at 13%. Coherent signed a letter of intent in June for up to $50 million in federal funding to expand its Texas plant, but traders expect little talk of subsidies.
Reading the Board
Coherent isn’t short of customers. Anderson said in August that fiscal 2027 production capacity was essentially sold out, with orders extending into 2028.
The challenge is meeting that demand profitably. Coherent aims to grow quarterly revenue from $2.05 billion to more than $3 billion by June 2027, but capital spending reached $556 million last quarter.
Adjusted gross margin stood at 40.2%, below the company’s longer-term target of more than 42%.
Wall Street expects $2.54 billion in December-quarter revenue. Guidance will show whether the expansion is paying off.
Options imply an 11.7% move, putting roughly $4.8 billion in market value on the line.
