Why is Micron (MU) stock falling Thursday? Samsung’s profit missed estimates, and Microsoft and Alphabet reported capital spending below analyst expectations.

Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) stock fell on Thursday after Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (OTC:SSNLF), a major memory-chip competitor, reported quarterly profit below analyst estimates.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) also reported capital spending below expectations.

The Nasdaq fell 1.53%, the S&P 500 lost 0.51% and the technology sector declined 1.4%.

Big Tech Spending Falls Short

Microsoft reported $45.2 billion in capital expenditures and finance leases, about 30% higher than a year earlier but below the $50.7 billion average analyst estimate, according to StreetAccount as cited by CNBC.

Alphabet reported $51.36 billion against the $55.09 billion analysts expected.

Samsung Profit Misses Estimates

Samsung reported third-quarter operating profit of KRW 107.4 trillion ($80.52 billion) late Wednesday, up about 783% from a year earlier, CNBC reported. LSEG estimates had called for KRW 107.66 trillion. Samsung stock fell nearly 6% in Seoul.

Samsung said AI-driven demand is likely to tighten memory supply further in 2027 than in 2026. SK Hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY) has said it expects demand to exceed supply through 2030.

Technical Analysis

Micron’s longer-term trend is still up, but the near-term chart is in a cooling phase: the stock is trading 2.2% below its 20-day SMA and 4.2% below its 50-day SMA, which keeps rallies from gaining traction. At the same time, it remains 26.3% above its 200-day SMA, a reminder that the bigger uptrend hasn’t broken.

RSI is the cleaner momentum read right now, sitting at 47.69, which points to neutral momentum rather than an oversold "snapback" setup.

The moving-average structure also explains the choppiness: the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA (bearish near-term), while the 50-day SMA is still above the 200-day SMA (bullish longer-term). From a timing perspective, the stock’s recent swing low in August and swing high in September frame the current pullback as a test of whether buyers will defend the post-summer uptrend.

  • Key Resistance: $1042.50 — a nearby round-number/pivot area where rebounds can stall, especially with the stock still below its shorter moving averages
  • Key Support: $902.50 — a nearby level that lines up with a recent demand zone, with price currently not far above it

MU Stock Price Activity: Micron shares were down 4.40% at $939.93 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
