AST SpaceMobile shares rebounded after an 11% previous-session decline as AT&T and AST completed the industry's first ground-to-satellite cellular network handoff.

AST SpaceMobile, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTS) shares are rebounding after falling roughly 11% in the previous session, as investors weigh concerns over reported talks by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) to acquire EchoStar Corporation (NASDAQ:ECHO) Boost Mobile against AST’s operational progress.

The shares remain near their 52-week low of $36.08.

On Monday, AST SpaceMobile and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) achieved the industry’s first successful handoff between a ground-based cellular network and a direct-to-device satellite network, marking progress toward commercial service.

Details

Technology from Ericsson and Nokia supported the network integration and mobility functions required to maintain connectivity as users transition between terrestrial and satellite coverage.

The milestone advances plans to complement AT&T’s wireless network with satellite coverage in remote and hard-to-reach areas using standard smartphones.

The handoff took place on Oct. 21, 2026, near Granite Falls, Washington, at 8:15 a.m. PT. It builds on earlier voice calls, texts and video calls completed using everyday smartphones connected to AST’s BlueBird satellites.

Ericsson provided AT&T’s radio and core technology, using network automation to reduce handoff times from seconds to milliseconds.

Nokia supplied the radio access technology and mobility software supporting AST’s satellite network, helping maintain service as users move between terrestrial and satellite coverage.

The companies aim to provide seamless satellite connectivity in areas beyond traditional cellular coverage, without requiring customers to manage the transition.

AST SpaceMobile also recently secured spectrum approvals in Brazil and is targeting intermittent coverage across five countries by year-end.

Brazil

Last week, AST SpaceMobile secured approval for 30 MHz of S-band spectrum and secondary access to up to 20 MHz in Brazil’s 700 MHz band.

The company also signed agreements with four regional mobile operators and plans to build ground infrastructure to expand satellite broadband services.

The approvals support direct-to-smartphone voice, data and video services without requiring hardware modifications.

Brazil has more than 210 million residents, but roughly half of its federal and state highways and two-thirds of agricultural land lack 4G or 5G coverage.

AST SpaceMobile now has agreements with more than 60 mobile operators serving over 3 billion subscribers worldwide.
