Musk says Austin research chip fab may cut a year-long process to a month.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) CEO Elon Musk said a research chip fab being built in Austin, Texas, may cut to a month what "would normally take a year."
Musk shared a clip of his Friday conversation with Ron Baron at the 33rd Annual Baron Investment Conference, and said on X, "If you want to iterate fast with radically new chip designs, join the Terafab project!" Terafab is a joint chipmaking project between SpaceX and Tesla.

Musk on the Austin Fab and Faster Iteration
In the video, Musk said, "We’re building a research chip fab in Texas, just in Austin, at Gigafactory Texas." The fab would have "the ability to do logic, memory, packaging, and do the lithography" under one roof, he said, so the team can design new chips and test the whole chip with "a very fast iteration cycle."
"Something that would normally take a year, I think we may be able to reduce to a month," Musk said.
Musk on U.S. Reliance on Asia for Chips
Musk said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (NYSE: TSM) and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (OTC: SSNLF) are building fabs in the U.S., but that the amount of chip fabrication in America is "very small" relative to Asia. Even counting every announced U.S. fab under best-case assumptions, he said, the total would be on the order of 10% of what is made in Asia.
Musk said his concern is that Asia, where chip production is overwhelmingly concentrated, carries geopolitical risk, and that "that risk may come to fruition at some point." If the U.S. does not have all the pieces necessary to build chips at scale, he said, "we may not have any chips at all or very few."
He added that, even setting geopolitical crises aside, "the rate at which we’re making chips is simply too slow."
Terafab Production Timeline and an Analyst’s View
In October, on SpaceX’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Musk said Terafab aims for volume production at its main Texas site in the third or fourth quarter of 2028. He called that an "aspiration" and described the dates as "very aggressive." He said the company aims to have a test chip working around May or June of next year at its research fab in Austin.
On Tesla’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Musk said the Austin research fab was "progressing quickly." Machinery commissioning would begin in the first half of next year, he said, and the first test chip, around May or June, would be made "just to see if we can make any chip at all."
Jay Goldberg, senior semiconductor analyst at Seaport Research Partners, said in an interview in October that commercially significant output from Terafab may not arrive until 2030. Goldberg said he had spoken with someone receiving Terafab equipment orders, and that the first small batch he knows about appears unlikely to arrive until 2028. In his view, that batch would be enough to train workers and learn the manufacturing process, but not to run a commercial factory. "I think he can do it faster than anyone else can. I don’t think he can do it fast," Goldberg said.
