Dow Jones posted its strongest session in 19 months Wednesday after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index posted its strongest post-midterm rally in 44 years and its strongest single-day session in 19 months on Wednesday, jumping 1,569.40 points after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, while President Donald Trump celebrated the broader market rally.
Dow Logs Best Day Since April 2025
The Dow soared 3.03% to 53,356.12, its biggest single-day percentage gain since April 9, 2025, when Trump paused reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, and the index surged 7.9%. The S&P 500 gained 1.58% to 7,688.62, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.44% to 25,736.51.
According to Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research, this was Dow’s “strongest post-midterm rally since 1982.”
Fundstrat Global Advisors co-founder and head of research Tom Lee told CNBC the reaction was "healthy" and "kind of expected," saying the election result could force Washington to negotiate.
Lee also said the outcome might "take pressure off the Fed," allowing policymakers to operate more independently, which he said was another reason markets could "rally pretty strongly."
Trump Celebrates Market Rally
Trump later wrote on Truth Social that the "Stock Market just hit another Record High," adding that investors’ "401(k)s are through the roof."
However, none of the major U.S. indexes actually reached a record during Wednesday’s session. The Dow came closest but remained below its prior high.
